Wayside Farm, 2017

Wayside Farm, the Jersey herd coming in for afternoon milking Elizabeth Hamilton

Wayside Farm in the Green Belt at Kings Langley is one of the last remaining ‘county farms’ in Hertfordshire.

This and other rural holdings were purchased by the County Council soon after the first world war to help returning servicemen get into agriculture.  In continuous farming use since then, the farm now has one of only two remaining Jersey herds left in the county, where fewer than 10 dairy herds of any breed remain. In 2017 Dacorum Borough Council proposed the allocation of the Wayside Farm land for housing, but campaigning by CPRE Hertfordshire along with opposition from the local parish council and community groups has resulted in its removal from Dacorum’s more recent list of proposed development sites. These Jersey cows are safe for now.
